Helping a charity navigate a merger
The campaign
Merger or bust
A well-known national charity called us when they were about to enter into a partnership with a larger organisation. It was make or break for the charity. If the merger didn’t go ahead, it could mean they’d have to close their doors after many years.
The prospect of a merger meant the charity needed to restructure fast and make redundancies. They wanted our support in making sure all internal communications were handled expertly and sensitively and that media interest was handled professionally.
Our work
Tailored communications
Following an in-depth consultation with the charity, we prepared a bespoke approach for them, which included a timeline of comms, key messaging and a detailed FAQ document for each stakeholder group.
Keeping in touch
Every week, we met with the client to discuss progress and any unanticipated events that may have arisen and needed response or attention. For any urgent enquiries, we were available for our client with our rapid-response service.
Internal messaging
In a crisis situation, clarity of communications is everything. We advised how the client could convey their messages with their team in the kindest way which would be most likely to elicit a positive reaction. We created clear slides for the client to present at their in-person meeting.
Media liaison
When it was time to inform the media about the planned changes, we issued our pre-prepared press release to the bespoke press list we had created on the charity’s behalf. The strong and personal relationships we have with the press meant that we were able to reach a receptive media audience who channelled all enquiries through us, acting as the charity’s press office.
The results
Planned and controlled
The merger went ahead as hoped, saving the charity from closure. Because the charity was, with our help, very well prepared for the media interest and had anticipated the questions they may be asked by their other stakeholder groups, they were able to navigate the changes calmly and efficiently, achieving only positive support through public channels, including social media.
